These courses are provided to assist the student in preparation for entry level and intern positions in nature centers, wildlife centers, and animal sanctuaries. Also included is the training needed to apply for the Federal Migratory Bird Permit.
Basics of Wildlife Rehabilitation
This course is designed to assist the student in preparation for entry level and intern positions in nature centers, wildlife centers and animal sanctuaries. It is also designed to meet the requirement for specific training needed to apply for the NC State Wildlife Permit. Course topics will include species specific natural history and behavior; nutritional needs and food preparation; health and safety practices; handling and restraint for mammals, birds, and reptiles; caging and husbandry; physical exam and diagnosing; rescue, capture, and transport; and basic injury/care of native wildlife. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the basics of wildlife rehabilitation from admission to release.
Advanced Wildlife Rehabilitation
This course is designed to assist the student in preparation for advanced level intern positions and staff positions in nature centers, wildlife centers, and animal sanctuaries. It is also designed to meet the requirement for specific training needed to apply for the Federal Migratory Bird Permit. Course topics will include advanced topics such as euthanasia, bandaging, splinting, wound management, physical therapy, and necropsy. Focus will also be on the care of orphaned and injured songbirds, water fowl, and raptors. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to provide advanced skill levels in wildlife rehabilitation, and be eligible for further hands-on training at a local wildlife sanctuary in order to earn the mandatory 100 hours as an application requirement for the federal license. Prerequisite: Basics of Wildlife Rehabilitation.
