Student E-mail
Every student who signs up for an online class automatically has an account created for them at the beginning of the semester. If you do not have an online class, but would still like an e-mail account, please visit us in the Ragsdale Building, room 105, with your current student ID, and we will be happy to create an account for you.
You will use the following address to access your mail account: http://mail.coastalcarolina.edu. From this page click GO. The next screen will ask for your username and password. Your username is your last name (in lowercase letters) and last four digits of your social security number. For example, smith1234. By default, your password is set to 123. We strongly recommend you change your password once you have logged in. This ensures the security of your e-mail account. If you'd like to give your e-mail account to anyone, let them know your address is: smith1234@coastalcarolina.edu, where smith1234 is your last name and last four digits of your social security number. Please keep a record of your password. If you forget it, we cannot retrieve it for you, but we can reset it back to 123.
Please note that AOL users are unable to log in to their e-mail accounts using an AOL browser. Please download either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. Also, military base personnel are unable to access this site from government computers.
If you have trouble logging in, or have another question about your account, please contact the Helpdesk. You can reach us by telephone at (910) 938-6123 or by
e-mail at helpdesk@coastalcarolina.edu.

Blackboard
If you are taking an online class, you're using Blackboard. The Distance Learning link under the Quick Links banner above will lead you to detailed instructions on how to access your class, use the digital drop box, e-mail your classmates and instructor, use the discussion board, and many of the other features of Blackboard. If you would like to log in to your class now, go to http://coastalcarolina.blackboard.com and click login. Your username is your last name and last four digits of your social security number. For example, smith1234. Your default password is your entire social security number with no dashes or spaces.
By default the e-mail address your instructor will use is your Coastal e-mail account. You must ask your instructor if you wish to use another e-mail account. Many instructors will only accept e-mail from a Coastal account.
If you are having trouble accessing your account and you are sure your username and password are correct, try deleting any cookies and temporary Internet files from your computer. If, after doing this, you are still unable to log in, please contact the Helpdesk. Remember AOL browsers and military base personnel will not be able to log in to their accounts. We will need to know your first and last name, your entire social security number, which online classes you are enrolled in, and your telephone number. If you e-mail us, please include all of this information so we can better serve you. You can reach the Helpdesk at (910) 938-6123 or by
e-mail at: helpdesk@coastalcarolina.edu.
If you have forgotten your password, or have not been able to log in and it is after 12:00 pm on the first day of classes, you may need to reset your password. Browse to the login screen by going to http://coastalcarolina.blackboard.com and clicking Login. Directly underneath the Username and Password boxes, there is a link that says "Forgot your Password?" After you click the link, you will be prompted to enter your first and last name along with either your Blackboard username or your e-mail address. The e-mail address you use must be the same address that is associated with your Blackboard account. Unless you have changed it, it is your Coastal e-mail account. An e-mail will be sent to your account with a link to a website that will allow you to change your password and log in to your class. If you receive an error, contact the Helpdesk. We may need to verify your Coastal e-mail account is set up correctly.
The Helpdesk can be reached at (910) 938-6123.

Online Keyboarding
Online Keyboarding is part of the OST curriculum. The most common problems are discussed here. If you are experiencing a different problem, please contact the HelpDesk.
If you are having trouble running the software, the first thing to do is check which version of Microsoft Word you are using. GDP10, the version of Keyboarding we are using, assumes by default you are using Microsoft Word XP. If you are using Word 2000, you will need to change the path to the Word Processor within the GDP10 program.
Step 1: Launch GDP10 and find the menus in the upper left corner of the screen.
Step 2: Click the [Options Menu] and select [Settings].
Step 3: Select the radio button that represents the version of Office you are using; it must be either 2000 or XP.
Step 4: You will need to verify the path to Word. If you are using Word XP, the default path is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Winword.exe. If you are using Word 2000, the default path is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe.
Step 5: Once you change the path, you will need to restart the program.
Note: If you still receive the same error, it may be that Word is not installed in the default location. Do a search for Winword.exe and note the path to the program. Follow the instructions above, but use this path to the program.
Also, Microsoft Word is the only word processor that will work for this class. You cannot use Microsoft Works, even if it is XP.
The other major problem students have is successfully uploading student data files. There is an upload link within the program, but it will only work if you have Outlook Express configured. In the computer lab on campus, we create an Export File, and send the data over the web. This has been the most successful method. If you are having trouble using the Upload button, click the link below for instructions on creating an Export file. Do not be intimidated by the number of steps, it is really not that hard once you go through it. You will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed to view the file, which can be downloaded here from Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Uploading, Exporting, & Importing Student Data.pdf
If you are still having trouble, come to the computer lab in the Ragsdale Building, room 105, and we will help you. Do not forget to bring your disk with you!
If the answer to your question cannot be found here, you can call Tech Support, or try to find your answer online. Try their Tech Support webpage. If you do not find the answer online, give their Tech Support a call at 1-800-331-5094.
As students get toward the end of the semester, some of the projects will require them to switch from GDP10 to their Word Processor then back again. An error message that is frequently received when returning from Word states " Cannot save this exercise in a report because the word processor file for this exercise is empty." One of the following explanations will usually clear up this problem.
- The file is saved to the wrong location (outside the GDP10data folder). To check the file location in Word, click on File/Save As and check the Save In location. If the file is not in the GDP10data folder, you will need to move it in, or do the project over.
- The file may be incorrectly named. Be sure to follow the instructions in the book when naming the file.
- Launching and then exiting Word without typing anything.
- If you do not complete the entire project, you may also receive this error when switching back to Word. Make sure you complete all steps, the last one should be to go back to GDP10.

SAM/TOM 2003
If you are taking a class that requires the SAM 2003 software, the following steps will help you install and use the program. You do not need to be running Office 2003 in order to run SAM 2003. The first thing to do is insert the CD that came with your book into your CD-ROM drive. The program should start on its own and display a menu. Select Install SAM XP. You will be prompted for Coastal's Institution Key: S3841071. You will then be prompted for your Key Code. This code is unique to you and can be found on the back cover of your SAM booklet. Next create your username and password. Your username should be your last name and last four digits of your social security number (ex. smith1234). Your password can be whatever you would like, just make sure you will remember it!
Once you have created your account, you will need to join the section your instructor has created. Click Sections from the menu on the left. Scroll down and select your section from the list provided. Click the arrow pointing to the right. This will move your selection to the box on the right. Next click OK. If your instructor has made any tests available, you should now be able to view them from the Exams list. You are ready to start practicing!
