American Sign Language A photo of students practicing their sign language to each other. What is it like to be deaf? For many, being deaf means membership in a close-knit supportive community. Coastal offers basic, intermediate and advanced levels of this American Sign Language (ASL). The courses are designed to build on each other with completion of each course a prerequisite for the next level. Participants will learn the language ASL, about the deaf community, and be introduced to the interpreting profession.
