In the process of successfully completing the Surgical Technology program, students will develop attributes consistent with a professional and qualified patient advocate who is prepared to function as a competent entry-level Surgical Technologist.  Students will be prepared to provide patient-centered care with an expertise that will benefit the patient populations in the communities they serve.  Students will develop cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behaviors) learning domains by meeting or exceeding the criteria in the Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology:

Cognitive Domain

Students will:

• Apply the knowledge of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology to the care of the perioperative patient as it relates to the role of the Surgical Technologist.
• Identify the various surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment and identify their uses as applied to surgical procedures.
• Develop an understanding of universal precautions, principles of asepsis, and sterilization in the surgical setting.
• Retain requisite theoretical knowledge of an entry-level Surgical Technologist in order to successfully complete the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting exam and obtain a position in a facility that relates to surgical technology.

Psychomotor Domain

Students will:

• Demonstrate perioperative technical skills and knowledge in a safe and effective manner and anticipate the needs of the surgical team in the perioperative setting.
• Apply the principles of aseptic technique in the perioperative setting.
• Utilize knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and operating room terminology.
• Prepare the proper instruments and supplies and identify the operative sequence in all perioperative phases of surgical procedures using safe practice methods.
• Actively participate in the scrub role in a variety of surgical specialty areas according to hospital and college policy.

Affective Domain

Students will:

• Function as a team member within the parameters of established group dynamics and display appropriate professional behavior in interpersonal relationships.
• Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with patients, families, and other healthcare personnel.
• Respond positively and ethically to the diversity of others including, but not limited to, sociocultural and socioeconomic factors, spiritual values, and lifestyle choices.
• Demonstrate appropriate analysis of patient’s and operating room team’s needs and utilize appropriate problem-solving and communication techniques to meet those needs.
• Display a strong surgical conscience that will guide their decision-making to provide a safe environment and outcome for the patients and members in the operating room setting.
